Stainless Steel Grade 15-5 (UNS S15500) Supplier

Properties and Appearance

Stainless Steel Grade 15-5 is a precipitation hardening, martensitic, chromium-nickel-copper stainless steel. This steel has transverse toughness and ductility, hardness capability, good strength and corrosion resistance. It typically has a metallic silver-grey appearance, like other stainless steels. It has a smooth surface finish, and its physical appearance can vary depending on the manufacturing process and the final treatment applied.

Grade 15-5 exhibits good corrosion resistance to atmospheric environments, fresh water and organic substances. This grade is known for its high strength, achieved through the precipitation-hardening process. It can be heat-treated to obtain a wide range of strength levels depending on the application. It offers good toughness and impact resistance, making it suitable for applications subjected to dynamic loading.

The following datasheet provides an overview of stainless steel-grade 15-5.

Fabrication and Heat Treatment

Machinability

15-5 steels can be machined in all conditions. To obtain best tool life, machine in H1150M.

Welding

Grade 15-5 steel can be welded by shielded fusion or resistance methods. AWS E/ER630 is the filler metal.

Forming

Stainless steel-grade 15-5 can only be formed mildly. Form while overaged for best results.

Heat Treatment

Stainless steel-grade 15-5 can be heat treated as follows:

  • CONDITION A: Soak for 0.5 h at 1038°C (1900°F). Cool in air.
  • CONDITION H 900: Soak condition A material for 1 h at 482°C (900°F). Cool in air.
  • CONDITION H 925, H 1025, H1075, H 1100, H 1150: Soak Condition A material for 4 h at temperature. Cool in air..
  • CONDITION H 1150M: Soak Condition A material for 2 h at 760°C (1400°F). Cool in air. Also heat for 4 h to 621°C (1150°F). Cool in air.

Hot Working

Stainless steel-grade 15-5 can be worked hot with all methods. Anneal afterward for good heat treat response.

Cold Working

Grade 15-5 steel is not suitable for cold working.

Annealing

Stainless steel-grade 15-5 is annealed at 1038°C (1900°F) for 1 h followed by rapid cooling.
