Titanium 6AI-4V (Grade 5) Properties and Appearance

Grade 5 Titanium (Ti-6AI-4V) is a popular titanium alloy classified as an alpha-beta alloy. It is widely known as the workhorse of all titanium alloys and accounts for almost half of all titanium usage worldwide. Among the titanium alloys being manufactured, it is the most widely used because it is high strength, lightweight, and corrosion-resistant. This alloy can be combined easily in most media due to its good mechanical strength and low-density properties. Grade 5 Titanium is fully heat treatable and can be subjected to heat around 400 degrees Celsius.

Additionally, it is known to resist many acidic conditions, such as oxidizing, reducing, and organic acids. However, this type of titanium alloy should not be used with red-fuming nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid. Furthermore, adding the alloying elements (Grade 24 Palladium, Grade 29 Ruthenium, and Grade 25 Nickel) can increase its threshold temperature and strength.

Applications

Titanium 6AI-4V (Grade 5) Alloy resistance to corrosion makes it a good material for offshore oil and gas equipment and many welded constructions. It is an excellent choice for the manufacture of aero-engine and airframe components, power generation, and medical equipment.
