Copper OFE 101 Properties and Appearance

Copper OFE 101 is 99.99% copper (element Cu) and has a reddish-orange hue. It has a high electrical conductivity (101% IACS rating), making it ideal for electrical applications. It also has good thermal conductivity, efficient heat transfer and is easy to shape and fabricate. The lack of oxygen gives OFE 101 resistance to hydrogen embrittlement at elevated temperatures.

Copper OFE 101 Applications

OFE 101 is used in audio and video cables, semiconductors waveguides, medical devices and high-performance electrical applications.

Copper OFE 102 Properties and Appearance

Copper OFE 102 is 99.95% copper (element Cu). It is commonly referred to as oxygen-free (OF) copper. The appearance is like OFE 101 with often a slightly brighter shade of reddish-orange. OFE 102 has a very high electrical conductivity (100% IACS rating), similar to OFE 101. It has excellent ductility and malleability, with superior weldability and resistance to hydrogen embrittlement.

Copper OFE 102 Applications

OFE 102 is commonly used in high-performance electronic components, especially those requiring tight tolerances and reliability such as vacuum tubes, connectors and terminals for critical electrical systems. It is also used in seals and gaskets for high-temperature applications.

OFE 101 and OFE 102 were developed to achieve high levels of purity and specific properties in copper. This began in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, driven by the need for increasingly pure and reliable copper for emerging electrical and electronic applications. OFE copper is chosen for spacecraft wiring due to its lightweight and conductivity, even in extreme temperatures and, due to its biocompatibility and corrosion resistance, OFE copper can be found in stents, implants, and medical instruments. Even some high-end musical instrument such as high-end trumpets use OFE copper for its resonance and tonal qualities. OFE copper also plays an important role in waveguides and antennas due to its ability to handle high frequencies and prevent signal loss.
