Alloy 42

Alloy 42 is a nickel alloy comprised of 42% nickel and 58% iron.

Alloy 42 Properties and Appearance

Alloy 42 has a silvery-white lustrous metal and belongs to the controlled expansion and low expansion alloy groups. Alloy 42 exhibits low, constant thermal expansion in temperatures up to 570° F (300° C) with good workability, weldability and shock resistance. This makes it well suited to applications where the thermal expansion must be minimized as an essential part of a component design.

You can find more about low expansion alloys here – Low Expansion Alloys/

With an ultimate tensile strength of 500, minimum yield strength of 300, and 30% elongation, it makes an excellent match with silicon and ceramic materials (alumina, beryllia, and vitreous glass compounds).

Heat treatment

In process annealing to relieve stress and work hardening of parts at intermediate stages of fabrication, anneal at at 1450° F for approximately 30 minutes. Controlled atmospheres, dry hydrogen should be used to heat treatments thereby minimising the probabilities of oxidization.
