Copper is an element with the symbol Cu and is a reddish, soft, malleable, ductile metal. Copper is one of the earliest known metals used, dating back at least 8,700 years and playing a significant role in the development of civilizations. Early peoples in Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley were the first to extract and work with copper, using it for tools, ornaments, and weapons. The Egyptians used the ankh symbol to denote copper in their system of hieroglyphs and it was used as a representation of eternal life. A more recent decorative use of copper is in the Statue of Liberty’s outer skin with its iconic green patina, a result of the natural oxidation process.
