Chromel® Supplier

Chromel® Properties and Appearance

Chromel® is a dull white-gray alloy metal containing approximately 90% nickel and 10% chromium. It is part of the thermocouple alloys group and is used within medical, automotive, alternative energy, and other industries in a wide range of temperatures and oxidizing environments. It is notably used in the positive conductors of ANSI Type E and Type K thermocouples, for measuring temperature consisting of two different conductors operating  below 1100°C. Chromel  is known for its high temperature resistance,  good oxidation resistance and it is a good conductor of heat and electricity. It is also ductile and can be easily formed into various shapes.

Summary Properties of Chromel

  • High melting point (1420°C)
  • High electrical conductivity
  • High thermal conductivity
  • Good corrosion resistance
  • Good oxidation resistance
  • Good ductility
  • Good weldability

Applications of Chromel

Chromel is a versatile alloy particularly well-suited for applications that require high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, and good electrical conductivity.

Chromel is commonly used in electrical resistance heating elements, for example within hair dryers, toasters, and ovens. Chromel is well-suited for this application because of its high electrical resistance and good oxidation resistance. Chromel is used in thermocouples to measure temperature in a variety of industrial processes, such as metalworking, glassmaking, and food processing. It is notably used in the positive conductors of ANSI Type E and Type K thermocouples, for measuring temperature consisting of two different conductors operating below 1100°C. Chromel is used in furnace components because of its high melting point and good oxidation resistance and in gas turbine components because of its high melting point and good corrosion resistance. A combination of light weight and good high-temperature strength make it suitable for aerospace applications.

Key Uses of Chromel

  • Thermocouples
  • Furnace components
  • Gas turbine components
  • Aerospace applications
  • Medical devices
