Specialty Metals Traceability Check Points & Best Practices

It goes without saying that your specialty metal purchases need to meet the highest traceability, inspection, and quality standards. Whether working with new local or international vendors or tried-and-true sources, it is imperative that materials are verified and laboratory tested for chemistry, mechanical and physical properties as they move through the supply chain.

Raw Material Originator Responsibility:

The raw material provider is to provide a Certificate of Conformance (CoC) – a manufacturer/importer identification document that includes:

  • Provider’s contact details, a clear description of the material name, and lot/batch number.
  • Standards and compliance specifications such as ISO9001-9015, AS9100, DFARS, etc.
  • A summary and details of third-party lab test results to verify that material compliance has been met.
  • A signature, name, title and date of the authorized person who issued the CoC.

Material Supplier Responsibility:

  • As materials are received from the Raw Material Originator, a unique identifier or code should be assigned to each batch/lot of material and entered in your ERP system. This is to reference the batch/lot and vendor when the need arises.
  • Materials should be lab tested and visually inspected again to verify materials meet specified standards.
  • Material suppliers should be ISO 9001-2015 and AS 9100 certified and meet RoHS, DFARS (when sourcing for federal and defense acquisitions) WEEE, REACH and Conflict Free Minerals standards.

Customer Responsibility:

  • It is the customer’s responsibility to inspect and verify test results upon material receipt and before production begins.

With these best practices in place, product manufacturers are assured that their material delivery is top-quality before production begins.
