Tungsten Metal Properties and Appearance

Tungsten is a robust, high-density metal also known as Wolfram with the chemical element symbol W and atomic number 74. It is a dull, silvery-gray metal with a lustrous sheen and has the lowest vapor pressure. Tungsten is part of the corrosion-resistant, high-temperature, refractory metals group.

Tungsten is known for its formability in extremely stable and hard carbides and is an important component in the steel-making industry. It has corrosion-resistant and ductile characteristics combined with low oxidation properties, low thermal expansion, and high tensile strength.

Tungsten has the highest melting point of all metals at 3,422 degrees Celsius. Because of this property, pure Tungsten can be impractical in common manufacturing techniques. Moreover, Tungsten’s high density of 19.3 g/cc makes it an excellent material for collimating radiation or shielding. Tungsten is usually alloyed to avoid extremely high processing temperatures required to cast and melt pure metals. Tungsten combines with other metals to form alloys that improve their refraction, strength, and hardness at high temperatures, for example, with other refractory metals such as steel and copper.

Applications

Tungsten excels in high-temperature applications having strong dimensional stability. Tungsten and its alloys are used in demanding environments, including aerospace, lighting, energy, chemical, medical, defense, nuclear, marine, and power generation. It is also suitable for use as weights, counterweights, and ballast, for example, for NASCAR or golf clubs.

Other examples of Tungsten applications and products:

  • Carbide cutting tools (Alloy steels, lamp filaments, superalloys)
  • High-Tungsten products (T-series high-speed steels)
  • Electrodes and light bulb filaments
  • Field emitters and heating elements
  • Cathode ray tubes
  • Heavy metal alloys (High-speed steel, cutting tools)
  • Superalloys (Wear-resistant coatings)
